Abstract:
Objective To investigate the correlation of nocturnal hypoxia with body composition in hypertensive patients with obstructive sleep apnea(OSA).Methods Forty hypertensive patients with OSA(OSA group) and 40 hypertensive patients without OSA(control group) were enrolled in the study.Hypoxic and body composition parameters were measured and compared between two groups. Results The weight,height,body mass index(BMI),neck circumference,waist circumference,hip circumference,waist-hip ratio,systolic blood pressure,total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),uric acid (UA)and prevalence rate of obesity were much higher in OS A group than those in control group(P<0.05).There were no significant diffemeces in age,diastolic blood pressure,high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),blood urea nitrogen(BUN).creatinine (Cr),fasting plasma glucose(FPG),2 h plasma glucose(2hPG) and prevalence rate of metabolic syndrome between two groups(P>0.05).The total number of hypoxic events,the total time of hypoxic events,apnea-hypopnea index(AHI),the total time of oxygen saturation lower than 90%,the total number of hypoxic events of oxygen saturation lower than 90%and percentage of time of oxygen saturation lower than 90%were higher in OSA groups than those in control group(P<0.05).There were no significant differences in total time of average hypoxic events,minimal blood oxygen saturation, average pulse and minimal pulse between two groups(>0.05).The body composition parameters including weight,body mass index(BMI),neck circumference,waist circumference,hip circumference and waist-hip ratio were positively correlated with the total number of hypoxic events,the total time of hypoxic events,apnea-hypopnea index(AHI),the total time of oxygen saturation lower than 90%and the total number of hypoxic events of oxygen saturation lower than 90%(P<0.01);the weight,body mass index(BMI) and neck circumference were positively correlated with percentage of time of oxygen saturation lower than 90%(P<0.05).Conclusion There is a positive correlation of nocturnal hypoxia and body composition parameters in hypertensive patients with OSA,which indicates that OSA and body composition may be involved in the development of metabolic syndrome and hypertension.
