Abstract:
Macular edema is an eye disease characterized by the accumulation of fluid in the macula which can cause severe impairment of vision. It is often secondary to retinal vascular disease, retinal pigment degeneration, inflammation and inner eye surgery. Optical coherence tomography(OCT) has been widely used in clinical ophthalmology with advantages of promptness, non-contact, non-invasiveness and high resolution; its clear retinal ultrastructural images greatly improve the detection level of macular edema. On the OCT images of macular edema, strong reflection signals distributed in the whole layer of the retina can be observed, which are called hyperreflective dots and become the hot spot of research in recent years. However, the nature and clinical implications of hyperreflective dots in macular edema are still unclear, this article reviews the current research advances in this field.
