Abstract:
Objective To survey the dental caries status and related factors among disabled children in Shanghai. Methods By using equal-sized stratified randomly sampling method, the survey on dental caries status and related factors was carried out among 365 disabled children aged 6~17 years in Shanghai. Results The prevalence of caries among disabled children was 53.97% with a mean DMFT/dmft score of 1.77, and the prevalence rate in urban areas was significantly lower than that in suburban areas (P<0.01). The constituent ratio of caries filling was 9.58%, with significant difference between urban and suburban areas (P<0.01), and among three types of disability (P<0.01). Logistic regression results showed that the related factors to dental caries were parents' assessment of their children's oral health, frequency of taking sweet drinks and living in urban areas or suburbs (P<0.05). Conclusion The oral health status of disabled children in Shanghai is less satisfactory. It is necessary to strengthen health education and preventive measures targeting to disabled children and their parents.
